“Relax, It Gets Worse” is a mixed-media, reconfigurable diptych that explores the constant negotiation between the individual and the structures that constrain human life. The work reflects on how much space people are given to become themselves, and how far they reshape themselves to fit frames of labels, roles, and expectations.
Each painted body is compressed into a rectangular box, presenting two contrasting psychological responses to confinement: the man visibly resists the space, while the woman appears to accommodate it. The two canvases, which have different depths, can be rearranged into eight distinct configurations. As their positions change, so does the relationship between the figures.
